Every October, artists all over the world take on the Inktober drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month.
I created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve my inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.
Anyone can do Inktober, just pick up a pen and start drawing.

1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).
2) Post it online
3) Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2017
4) Repeat
Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. INKtober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.
That's it! Now go make something beautiful.
INKTOBER PEN LIST
1A) Copic Multiliner
A great pen to learn inking on. I have the 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 and they all work great. These are a little more expensive than your typical disposable technical pen, but I like the tips better, and like the fact that I can buy refills for them.
A work horse. It has a nylon brush tip, and offers a smooth and powerful line but can also give you fun expressive lines too. I've been drawing with this pen for years and it holds up to a beating, yet will still give you a fine delicate line if you need it. I highly reccommend it.
1C) Pentel Fude Brush Pen, Extra Fine
This pen is my back up work horse and in some cases its my go-to. I've inked an entire comic with it and it never falters. Makes clean, meaningful lines with its durable tip.
1D) Pilot Futayaku Double-Sided Brush Pen
Special Offer: Get this pen free with an order of $55 or more from Jetpens.com
This pen is my favorite felt tip. The line is crisp and stays that way over most of its life time. An added bonus is the grey ink on the flip side that's great for shading.
1E) Kuretake No. 13 Fountain Brush Pen
This pen is beautiful. The lines are rich yet sharp. Its great for details and broad strokes. The pen has a little more weight to it so you feel like you're actually holding something. The fine nylon bristles have a satisfying snap to it allowing you to intuitively move from thick to thin. I love it.
I've been using this pen a lot lately. Does great details and the ink flow is always consistent. It gives you beautiful delicate lines from both its tips. The larger of the two is a nylon bristle tip, and does all the heavy lifting. The smaller one is a felt tip and is great for added details. When they start to get dry you can use them for some cool dry brush effects. Not refillable, so beware.
1G) Copic Gasenfude Nylon Brush Pen Black
This is the newest pen in drawing arsenal. It has a springy tip that can get some nice delicate lines. The inkflow is balanced. But the best thing about this brush pen is its WATERPROOF. So markers don't smudge it, watercolors play well with it. Its a great pen for working with all kinds of wet media.
2A) Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Watercolor Brush - Round #1
This is what brush pens wish they were. This is the gold standard, Rolls Royce of inking tools. Its the brush Bill Watterson drew Calvin and Hobbes with. No nylon, synthetics, or plastic here, just wood, metal, and hair. There's nothing quite like drawing with one. The ONLY draw back is you have to dip it in ink, which can get tedious, especially while under a deadline.
4A) Winsor & Newton Drawing Ink Bottle, 14ml, Black Indian
Works great for inking with a brush or nib.
4B) Kuretake Zig Cartoonist Sumi Ink 60ml Bottle - Black
Works great for inking with a brush. Also really good for washes.
I've tried out a bunch of white pens, and this one is hands down the best. Don't waste you time, and just get the roll with Gellys. (I just came up with that, contact me Sakura if you need any more marketing copy)
Super handy for adding a little bit of highlight on a drawing.
7C) BIC Wite-Out Correction Tape
I use this stuff for all my inking mistakes. It might not be the best option, but its so easy.
7D) Deleter Manga Ink - White 2
Really opaque and good for editing areas, or just adding white in spots.
Every year I post a list of the best pens to use for Inktober. These are pens I've used and trust to get the job done.
Learn How To Ink
I created a class for SVSlearn.com on how to ink. This class is over 2 hours of inking instruction. Filled with exercises, techniques and tips, both beginners and intermediate drawers will learn how to improve their inking game and level up.
Includes a PDF of high resolution scans of my drawings to practice inking over. Check it out:
